As part of our ongoing series of reading enrichment activities this year, we were honoured to host renowned children's author Jane Huong on 7th March. Ms. Huong, a British national based in Hong Kong, has published several popular books for young readers.

The event began with two of our students reading aloud from Ms. Huong's story "The Clever Judge." Ms. Huong then gave an insightful talk, sharing her experiences and insights into her creative process.

An interactive question and answer session followed, with students actively engaging with our guest. They posed thoughtful questions about her story ideas and what inspired her work. Ms. Huong patiently answered each query, helping students learn more about her book and writing.

The author visit engaged our young readers and inspired enthusiasm for books. Students gained an appreciation for the creative process of storytelling. We thank Ms. Huong for generously sharing her time and talents with our school community. Events like this highlight the joy of reading and learning.

A group of talented students completed the prestigious Write! WeCan English Writing Programme, jointly organized by Project We Can and Young Post at South China Morning Post (SCMP) last summer. The program aimed to nurture their interest in English and help develop their essential writing skills.

Seven students successfully completed the Level 1 and 2 programs and received certificates of completion. Two outstanding Level 2 students were invited to join the advanced Level 3 program.

Throughout the program, students engaged in activities focused on improving reading comprehension, building vocabulary, and enhancing storytelling abilities. They were guided by experienced teachers and SCMP writers to structure captivating stories. Our students had valuable opportunities to develop their English skills, enhance their creativity, and gain confidence in their writing abilities.

A proverb says ‘No pain, no gain’. Yet, learning English can be an amusing process instead of being a painful one. English Department first launched a calligraphy competition in which each form was assigned with five ‘Sayings of Wisdom’. Not only did students practice writing the sayings, they also read aloud to English teachers and English ambassadors during lunch time to collect stamps.

List of winners of the calligraphy competition was announced on 27 September. Overall champions for junior form and senior form are 1A Zhan Xilian and 5A Kwok Kam Pui respectively. Congratulations to the winners!

There are yet more to come. Stay tuned for the announcements from the English Department. Remember one of the sayings, ‘where there is a will, there is a way.’ English Department offers multiple ways to make learning happen in a much more entertaining way. Keep your Reading Card to collect the stamps. The more stamps you collect, the more prizes you get!
