南獅分[佛裝]和[鶴裝],[鶴裝]嘴部多似鴨嘴。[佛裝]則面型及嘴部較闊。

而[馬來西亞]則將[鶴裝]鼻部改細,及加兔毛,使其形狀更祥和及可愛,形成今日的[馬來西亞鶴裝]和[馬來西亞佛裝]。

現時扎作獅頭多由中國,香港及馬來西亞製作,各具特色。而香港及馬來西亞的獅頭價格較昂貴,但外型美觀。中國較便宜,而製作獅頭的公司,在不斷吸收馬來西亞獅的特色及改良,現已成最大的輸出的國家。附圖為兩者的比較,黃緑為中國製造,銀藍為馬來西亞出品。

南獅早期多以黃,紅,黑三色為主.三色中各具代表.黃色代表劉備,黃臉白鬚,腦後有三個金錢,代表智,仁,勇俱備.紅色代表關公,紅臉黑鬚,腦後有兩金錢,代表智,勇雙全.黑色代表張飛,黑臉黑鬚,年少氣盛,腦後有一金錢,代表勇.而現在的舞獅造型,為了適合獅藝比賽,不再單純黃,紅,黑三色,多以顏色鮮艷為主,務求突出,以吸引觀眾,多以金,銀二色為主.

Types of Lions

Lion dancing can be divided into 2 types: the South and the North. The North type of lions looks quite real. These lions have golden yellow hair and their movement is swift. The lions with red ribbon represent the male lions while the lions with green ribbon represent the female lions

The South type of lions can be grouped into 2 kinds. The first one has a big mouth and a large face. The second one has a flat mouth.

In Malaysia, the lions in the lion dancing have been modified. They have small noses and wear white hair.

Now, most lions are manufactured in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia. The lions produced by Hong Kong and Malaysia are more expensive. Since the lions produced by China are cheaper and she becomes a major exporter. Here are two pictures illustrating the differences of lions between China and Malaysia.

The lion heads can divided into 3 categories: Lau’s, Kwan’s and Cheung’s. Lau, Kwan and Cheung are the famous generals in the past in China.

In Hong Kong, most lions in dancing have 3 colors: yellow, red and black. The yellow color of lions represents General Lau because Lau had a yellow face and white beard. There are 3 coins behind lions’ brain which mean intelligence, kindness and bravery. The red color of lions represents General Kwan because Kwan had a red face and black beard. There are 2 coins behind lions’ brain which mean intelligence and bravery. The black color of lions represents General Cheung who had a black face and black beard. There is a coin behind lions’ brain which means bravery.

At present, the colors of lions have more colors for sake of getting higher score in competitions and attracting more viewers. The colors of gold and silver become popular. ”.
